Employee Spotlight: Charles Darling

by Perimeter Aviation • 3 min read

It could be said Charles was born into the world of aviation. With a dad work at the Flight Service Station with Nav Canada, he was exposed to aviation from a young age and is ultimately what inspired him to pursue his license. By the time he entered high school, his mind was truly set, and living in Sioux Lookout, an aviation hub, his opportunities were limitless.

After graduating in 2022, Charles started his flight training at Sault College. Behind every step, his dad was there to help and encourage throughout his training. After completing his second year, he started searching for a job to kickstart his career. He began working as a Customer Service Agent for Perimeter Aviation and Bearskin Airlines in Sioux Lookout. Despite working full-time, his determination to reach the flight deck never ceased, often spending his downtime studying with flashcards. Charles took the chance to join the Pilot in Waiting Program, and in May, he received notice that he could start his Metro training to prepare for flight line.

His favourite part of the job? Being able to learn about the industry from the ground up.

“There is a lot of moving parts and hard work from everyone to service the communities we fly to.” He says. The great people he’s had the pleasure of working with, and befriending are another part of the job he loves.

Charles decided to work for Perimeter because it was the best place to start his career after flight training. Knowing Sharon, the Sioux Lookout supervisor, made the decision an easy one when a position became available. “I’m happy I started with the company because I’ve been able to meet a lot of amazing people and I’ve also had the opportunity to start flying.”

When asked what advice he’d give to others pursuing a career as a pilot, he said he’d recommend starting in a ground operations role, like working in Customer Service. “It might feel like a long road; however, I can’t recommend it enough thanks to people I’ve had the opportunity to meet while getting to learn how the operation runs on the ground.” He went on to say, “This experience has been very valuable to me and helped me a lot during my initial training on the Metro.”

Witnessing a career start from the ground up, in a very literal sense, is something we’re honoured to be a part of. Stories like Charles’ remind us that when you set your sights on a goal and are willing to work hard to get there, the sky isn’t just the limit. We’re proud to have people like Charles as part of Perimeter and we can’t wait to see where his career goes.
