Perimeter Aviation Airport Security Screening

All passengers departing from a Canadian airport, including the Winnipeg Perimeter Terminal (WPG), are required to undergo security screening before boarding a flight. As part of the screening process you maybe be required to do one, or all of the following:

• Place all personal items in a bin(s)
• Send your bin(s) and carry-on through the X-ray scanner
• Asked to open your carry-on bag for review by security personnel
• Pass through the walk-through metal detector or body scanner

To help make your security screening as smooth and stress-free as possible, we recommend familiarizing yourself with the list of items that are permitted and prohibited on board. Preparing in advance can improve your screening experience.

Please note that once you have passed through security screening, you are in the secure area of the airport. If you choose to leave this area at any point, you must undergo a full screening process again each time you wish to re-enter.

We recommend staying within the secure zone to avoid the need for repeated screenings and to ensure you meet your boarding call. If you are not at the gate and available for boarding at your scheduled departure time, you will be denied boarding and are not entitled to denied boarding compensation.

Permitted in your carry-on

Liquids, aerosols, and gels (hairspray, deodorants, and medicines) are permitted in your carry-on through screening. 

• A single item must not exceed 0.5 kg (0.5 L). 
• The entire amount must not exceed 2 kg (2 L). 
• Containers larger than 0.5 kg (0.5 L) will not be accepted, even if they are only partially filled.
• Valves must be protected by a cap or other means to prevent the release of contents.

Prohibited carry-on items

• Liquid, aerosols, or gels in containers larger than 0.5 kg (0.5 L) and total amount exceeding 2 kg (2 L).
• Any sharp objects.
• Illegal or prohibited drugs.

Exemptions

• Exemptions will be made for baby formula, baby food, or milk if travelling with children two (2) years of age and under as well as prescription and essential medicines. Items do not require a bag, but may require additional screening.

Additional Screening 

If you or your bag trigger an alarm, or if you are chosen at random, you may be asked to undergo additional screening. This may involve:

• A screening officer using a hand-wand device that detects metal objects.
• A partial or fully physical search (pat down) of your person.
• A scan of the body using a full-body scanner.

Sacred and Spiritual Items

We do not recommend packing delicate or fragile items in your checked baggage. Screening officers are instructed to treat items with the highest level of respect and care and to screen sacred and spiritual items without holding or touching them.

Before the screening process begins, please advise the screening officer if you have a sacred or spiritual item. Advise the officer if:

• your sacred or spiritual item cannot be physically touched;
• there is a specific protocol for handling your sacred or spiritual item;
• an item cannot go through X-ray screening;
• an item cannot be screened by a screening officer of a particular gender;
• if the item includes a healing bundle with a sharp;
• you must keep wearing the sacred or spiritual item during screening.

The screening officer will provide you with screening options for the item based on the nature of the item and your preference. You may request that your item be screened in a private search area if you feel more comfortable.

Restrictions apply to sharps which can often be part of a healing bundle. If you are travelling with a healing bundle that includes a sharp, you must declare it at check-in. The Customer Service Agent will fill out the appropriate paperwork and facilitate the handling of the item with the crew on board your flight.

If you are travelling with a sacred or spiritual item, please contact the Customer Service Centre before your trip to ensure personnel are notified and appropriate handling and care arrangements can be made.

Travelling to First Nations Communities

We are dedicated to supporting First Nations communities in combating the spread of illicit drugs and other intoxicants. When travelling to a First Nation, we do not permit the transportation of alcohol or cannabis, and these items are not permitted in your carry-on, checked baggage, or on your person.

With your ongoing support, we are committed to further enhancing the safety and well-being of the communities we serve. Together, we can continue to make a significant impact and create safer environments for everyone.

Detection Dogs

Perimeter Aviation collaborates with the Winnipeg Police Service K9 Unit to enhance security measures at the Winnipeg Perimeter Terminal. This partnership involves authorized, random searches by the K9 Unit for illegal drugs and controlled substances in checked baggage and cargo.

If you encounter the K9 Unit while at the terminal, please refrain from approaching them as they are actively on duty and focused on their security tasks. This helps ensure the safety and efficiency of their operations and contributes to a secure travel environment for all passengers and staff.

Found Drugs and Alcohol

If illegal drugs, illicit substances, or prohibited controlled substances are discovered by any employee, security personnel, or the Winnipeg Police Service, the following actions may be taken:

• The items will be confiscated and reported to local authorities.
• The owner of the items will be questioned by authorities and airport security.
• The owner may be denied boarding and will not be eligible for denied boarding compensation. Depending on the ticket type, this may also lead to ticket forfeiture.
• The owner may face legal consequences, including fines, imprisonment, or travel bans.

These measures are part of our commitment to maintaining a safe and secure environment at all our facilities. We urge all passengers to comply with all legal regulations regarding prohibited items to ensure a smooth and hassle-free travel experience.
