Children and Family

Travelling with your children can take a little extra planning. Here, you’ll find essential details to make booking for infants and children straightforward.

Child Reservations

Under the Age of 2

For infants under 2 years old, you have two options:

  • Travel with your infant in an approved car seat that fits securely into the aircraft seat.
  • Please note, this reservation must be made via our Customer Service Centre as it cannot be booked online.

Travel with the infant seated in your lap:

  • Lap-held infants are not charged a base fare or taxes.
  • You must hold the infant on your lap for the duration of the flight.
  • Only one lap-held infant per ticketed adult, and no single passenger shall be responsible for more than one infant whether the infant is on an accompanying passenger lap or in a car seat.
  • Lap-held infants are not entitled to separate baggage allowances.

Children (2 to 11 years old)

All children over 2 years old and younger than 12 must have a full fare ticket (this excludes seat sales and other promotions) and be accompanied by an adult older than 16 years of age. Discounts are not offered for children.

If your child is travelling alone please inquire about our Unaccompanied Minor Service for solo child travellers.

Young Adults (12-16 years old)

Young adults may travel independently or opt for our Unaccompanied Minor Service.

Car Seats and Child Restraint Systems

Approved Car Seats

The use of a child safety seat or restraint device is:

  • Optional for a small child (older than an infant), as per the manufacturer’s guidelines for the device’s weight restrictions.
  • If a child is travelling in a car seat on board the aircraft, a seat must be purchased for them.
  • We do not supply car seats or any other types of child restraint systems.

Requirements

If a Child Restraint System is used to secure an infant in the aircraft during flight, it must meet the following requirements:

Child Restraint Systems must meet one of the following standards:

  • CMVSS 213 and CMVSS 213 1 Child and Infant Restraint Systems, which must be affixed with the National Safety Mark which indicates the number of the standard or standards to which the restraint system conforms.
  • The FMVSS No. 213 manufactured to US standards and must bear a label stating, “this child restraint system conforms to all Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards” and in red lettering, “This restraint is certified for use in motor vehicles and aircraft”.
  • The CARESTM Device manufactured by AmSafe and which bears a label stating, “FAA approved in accordance with 14 CFR 21.305(d), approved for aircraft use only”, and should also bear a part number 4082-1()-().***

If your car seat doesn’t meet these safety requirements, you can check it in with your other baggage free of charge. Only one item related to infant travel is complimentary.

Car Seat Dimensions and Safety Requirements

  • Ensure your child is securely fastened in the approved car seat whenever the “Fasten Seatbelt” signs are illuminated.
  • An adult aged 16 or older must accompany all infants and children in car seats, and they may not be seated in the emergency exit rows.
  • Familiarize yourself with the car seat manufacturer’s installation instructions. Your child must fit the manufacturer’s specified height and weight requirements for the restraint system, and you should know how to securely fasten and release your child from the system.

The car seat:

  • Must not exceed the dimensions of the aircraft seat.
  • Must be approved and be installed according to the labelled direction.
  • Child booster seats are not permitted for use on the aircraft.
  • Tether straps are not authorized for use by commercial air carriers.

Tikanagan (Cradle boards)

Tikinagan is not approved by Transport Canada as a restraint device. Infants may stay in the warmth of the Tikinagan throughout the flight, but any backboards (made of cardboard, wood, or other materials) must be removed and stowed according to the carry-on baggage allowance.
