We are honoured to dedicate the newest addition to our fleet, Dash-8 C-GYCM, to the late Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs Grand Chief Cathy Merrick. A remarkable leader from Pimicikamak Cree Nation, her life’s work was dedicated to strengthening and uplifting Indigenous communities across Manitoba and improving quality of life of First Nations Peoples.
Her Lasting Legacy
Grand Chief Merrick’s path into leadership began in her home, Pimicikamak, where she served as Councillor for 12 years before becoming the second woman ever elected Chief of Pimicikamak, a position she held from 2013 to 2018. Her commitment to community wellbeing focused on championing for improving access to quality healthcare, which included backing the push to develop a major healthcare centre within the community.
In 2022, she made history as the first woman elected Grand Chief of the Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs (AMC), later earning re‑election in 2024. A strong advocate for MMIWG2S, she worked to raise awareness and called for justice for those who have been harmed. She worked hard to advance progress, championing for equitable healthcare, improving education systems, and reforming the child welfare system; always willing to stand up against injustice and inequality.
Honouring a Trailblazer
Our aircraft dedication to a Grand Chief, reflects the lasting impact Merrick made across Manitoba and beyond. Our flights connect families to medical care, education, gatherings, essential supplies, and to one another. Merrick dedicated her life to building those same connections. She was a trailblazer in her own right, which is why it felt fitting to honour her legacy through this dedication.
A permanent dedication is displayed near the aircraft door, featuring Grand Chief Merrick’s spirit name in English, Cree, and Cree Syllabics. It stands as a reminder to all who step on board that leadership, service, and respect travel with us. The aircraft registration, C-GYCM, is also symbolic, with the “CM” honouring Cathy Merrick’s name. Together, these elements serve as an enduring tribute to the guidance she offered and the path she helped shape for so many.
The dedication is more than a gesture, it’s a promise to honour her legacy with every flight. For years to come, C-GYCM will reflect alignment with our purpose, the belief that access matters, and that in the North, connectivity is not a convenience, but a lifeline.
Dedication Event
On January 28, a dedication event was held, gathering leaders, family members, stakeholders, and Perimeter Aviation employees to commemorate the dedication of C-GYCM. The event began with a traditional pipe ceremony and blessing of the aircraft and hangar, led by Elder David Blacksmith. His presence and guidance set a meaningful tone for the day.
What followed were heartfelt memories and remarks from:
- Perimeter Aviation CEO and President Joey Petrisor
- Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs Grand Chief, Kyra Wilson
- Assembly First Nations Regional Chief William Moore
- Manitoba Keewatinowi Okimakanak Grand Chief Garrison Settee
- Southern Chiefs’ Organization Grand Chief Jerry Daniels

It was a beautiful and touching event recognizing the legacy Grand Chief Cathy Merrick forged, and the lasting impact she has left on the communities she represented.
Miigwech, Grand Chief Merrick.
