Spotlight: Kris Unrau

Behind every Perimeter Aviation flight is a person whose journey inspires us all. Today, we’re excited to spotlight Dash-8 pilot Kris, whose aviation career took off from humble beginnings as a ramp agent.

Kris’ story isn’t the typical childhood dream of becoming a pilot. “I fell into aviation while looking for work. Perimeter was hiring ramp agents, and I took the job loading baggage.” But being on the tarmac every day, surrounded by aircraft and the hum of engines lit a spark. “It was during that time that my interest in flying really took hold,” he recalls.

A flight instructor and colleague noticed his growing interest and offered mentorship. “That support was a turning point; within two years, I had earned my pilot’s license and started my first job as a Beech 99 First Officer.” He reflects.

For Kris, the ramp wasn’t just a job, it was a launchpad. “I realized I wanted to be in the flight deck instead of just working beside it; what began as a job quickly turned into a passion,” he shares. That passion carried him through the rigorous training required to fly the Dash-8.

“Transitioning to the Dash was unlike any phase of my career. The training was more intensive, more manuals, longer sessions, and flying the simulator added a new level of complexity. The sim training, especially, has been a game-changer. It sharpens your skills because you’re constantly running through routine procedures and unexpected scenarios. It helped me become a more refined pilot.” he explains.

With over 10,000 hours logged, Kris says his favourite part of being a pilot is the view and the work-life balance. “My ‘office’ has the best views. Being a pilot at Perimeter also means I have the flexibility to choose my schedule and the benefit of being home every night, not all pilots get that.”

On why he chose Perimeter Aviation, Kris says, “Perimeter gave me my start in aviation and has continued to offer opportunities for growth. The people, the culture, there’s a real sense of community here.”

Kris leaves aspiring pilots with this advice: “Don’t be afraid to ask questions, there’s always a learning curve as you move on to the next level. Stay curious, stay humble, and keep pushing forward.”

From ramp to the flight deck, Kris’ journey is a powerful reminder that passion can be discovered, nurtured, and transformed into purpose. We’re proud to have him as part of the Perimeter Aviation family.
