Today, we are shining a spotlight one of our Captains, Luke Loewen, whose career path from the ramp to the cockpit is an inspiring journey of dedication, and pursuit of excellence.
Luke joined Perimeter Aviation as Ramp Operations Manager where he learned about airline operations. Before then, he had initial pilot training, but it was while working on the ramp that he decided that he wanted to fly as a career. Driven by a dream to soar among the clouds, Luke went on to complete his pilot training. He worked on the ramp for over a year when an internal opportunity opened for a first officer, he applied and successfully transitioned into his first pilot position as a Metro First Officer.
On what inspired him to become a pilot, Luke says, “I have always been interested in being a pilot for as long as I can remember. I knew that I wanted to work in the aviation industry, but I had to figure out what area of aviation I wanted to pursue. During the COVID-19 pandemic, a close friend told me, ‘Luke, you have always talked about being a pilot, now is your chance to try!”
Luke’s career soared to great heights when he was honoured with the EIC Circle of Excellence Award in 2021 for improving the Ramp procedures which ultimately increased on-time performance.
On what he looks forward to the most as a pilot, Luke says, “I look forward to the constant challenges this job brings. Every day we fly is different. Day to day challenges include flying to new places, flying through different airspaces, and the weather is constantly changing.”
Luke is now a Metro Captain and encourages aspiring pilots to keep a long-term goal in mind as a motivator for success. He says, “The journey to becoming a pilot is not easy and it requires a lot of financial and personal sacrifice. However, the dividends are incredible because being a pilot is a rewarding experience.”
