Today we’re shining the spotlight on Flight Follower, Marlene, whose journey into aviation is as inspiring as it is unexpected.

More than two decades ago, Marlene found herself at a crossroads. After walking away from a 17-year job and a 9-year relationship, just a week after the 9/11 tragedy; she made the bold decision to reinvent her life. “I decided the time I spent travelling with my parents when I was young, were some of the best times of my life. I really enjoyed travelling so I decided to get into aviation, as the perks were attractive,” she reflects.

Marlene applied for a part-time check-in agent role at Bearskin Airlines, but destiny had other plans. After a promising interview, she received a surprising call. “HR informed me I was not the recipient of the counter agent position. However, I was perfectly suited for a full-time dispatch and flight follower temporary position.” With not much experience in dispatch, she leaned on a friend for guidance and confidently accepted the challenge.

I reached out to a friend in dispatch who explained the basics. I felt confident I could do the job, so I accepted the offer. The base manager told me, ‘Sit down kid, you’re going to start right away,’ and just like that, I was in it.

Marlene quickly picked up the aviation lingo and operations and, within six months, was offered a permanent position. Over her 22+ years, she expanded her skills into crew scheduling and deeper operational knowledge but always found herself drawn back to a space where she thrived: flight following, a role focused on coordinating and communicating aircraft movements, both on the ground and in the air.

When asked about her favourite part of the job Marlene responded, “No day is the same. There’s always a new challenge or destination, and I’ve met people from all walks of life with fascinating stories.”

To those considering a career in aviation, Marlene has just one message:

The sky is the limit.

Marlene’s story reminds us that it’s never too late to change course, chase new dreams, and find a new sky to soar in.
